Bold statement ceilings aren’t just for living rooms or reception areas. There are many ways to create a bold, eye-catching ceiling in your kitchen.

Do you already have a ceiling feature?

If you already have a distinctive feature on your kitchen ceiling, you can enhance it or create a design around it.

For example, rustic oak beams will lend themselves to a country style kitchen design. Or, if you have a central lighting medallion, you may want to recreate that pattern in other areas of the kitchen.

If the feature isn’t that attractive, there are ways you can enhance it. If you have beams that aren’t that great to look at, you could change them by turning them into a hanging storage feature. That way, the eye is drawn to what’s hanging from them – copper pots and pans make a striking decoration.

Brighten up a boring ceiling

If there’s nothing interesting about your kitchen ceiling, you can brighten it with a splash of colour. Kitchen ceilings don’t have to be white.

Darker colours can be overpowering – it depends on the shade of your walls. However, soft, powdery lemons, blues and greens can work well. Another popular ceiling design is stripes. Usually, these are picked out in an accent colour that’s used throughout the kitchen.

Another option is to stencil a pattern onto the ceiling – or use a stencil design to create your own light medallion. Using a paint that will stand out – such as gold or a deep red, you can paint a fake medallion around your light fitting. The more distinct the colour and design, the more the eye will be drawn upwards to the decoration.

Make your lighting a feature

The easiest way to make a ceiling more interesting is to add attractive lighting.

You could make a bold, central statement with an eye-catching pendant light. Oversized stainless steel shades create drama in an industrial-chic kitchen.

If your kitchen has more country house charm, a chandelier in the centre of the ceiling brings glamour and personality. Alternatively, you could go in search of bespoke light fittings. Hand-painted coloured-glass lights will give an individual style and character to your kitchen.

For an understated approach, recessed lighting can be fitted in a pattern of your choice. This could be purely functional and focus on work areas – or it can be highly creative and form a starry sky.

Keep it cool with a ceiling fan

A stylish and practical way to liven up a ceiling is with fans. As temperatures increase, so does our need to keep cool.

Ceiling fans have long been a feature in more tropical climates, and they’re becoming increasingly popular in Britain. A large, central fan can dominate the ceiling, or you could have a series of smaller fans.

Fans are a great way to keep cool when you’re cooking – and bring a Mediterranean feel to the kitchen.
