Make your kitchen sparkle with health!
In the last year, we’ve all become more aware of how important it is to keep surfaces clean and avoid spreading germs.
Fortunately, there are now a number of ways you can avoid the spread of viruses, bacteria and irritants such as pollen and mites. This is particularly relevant if you suffer from asthma or are prone to allergies.
It’s tempting to put everything into the dishwasher and use the same setting each time. But if you have pots, pans, or dishes with baked-on food and grease, they need a hotter wash.
The high temp wash option on a dishwasher will increase the main wash temperature to a minimum of 130°F. This is much more effective when you need to get rid of heavier residues.
As well as the hot wash feature, many dishwashers now have a dry option too. The dry feature uses minerals to take away the humidity after the wash. This cuts down on the risk of stacking damp dishes together – warm moisture is the perfect environment for bacteria to form.
You save time by choosing the wash and dry option as your dishes and utensils are ready to be put away in the cupboard or drawer as soon as you take them out of the dishwasher.
Try and wash all your very dirty dishes and pots together – just like dividing up lightly soiled and heavily soiled clothes when you do your laundry. Also, avoid stacking too much in the dishwasher. For a really effective clean, items should have space between them.
Whether it’s an accumulation of grime on a cooker hood or a build-up of detergent in a washing machine, it’s important to keep filters clean. The purpose of a filter is to stop impurities from coming through, and if it’s blocked, it can’t do its job properly.
Many cooker hoods have grease filters that are spring-loaded and simple to remove. It’s easy to take them out, give them a clean in the sink with washing up liquid, rinse and replace them. If the filter is heavily soiled, it could be put in the dishwasher.
Filters from washing machines and other appliances can generally be easily taken out and rinsed under cold water. Plus, make sure you remove the fluff that accumulates in the tumble dryer filter.
A hot wash is vital to ensure you remove bacteria from heavily soiled clothes or bedding. A hot wash could be 60°C or even up to 90°C.
The hotter the temperature, the better the clean as high levels of bacteria can withstand washing at lower temperatures. If you want to ensure complete cleanliness of your baby or children’s clothes or the clothes of an ill person, make sure that any nappies, clothing, or bedding with tough stains goes on a hot wash.
If you’re prone to allergies, it helps to have a vacuum cleaner with a washable HEPA filter. This will filter out more allergens than a normal dust bag, and you can wash and reuse it – it’s better for the environment too as you don’t have to keep replacing bags.
HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters can remove minute allergens that normal bags can’t – this includes things like spores, pollen, and bacteria.
