Wood, laminate, quartz, granite - which is best for you?
Worktops need to be tough enough to handle a variety of kitchen tasks – and offer a high degree of hygiene. On top of this, they play a critical role in any kitchen design, so they need to look attractive.
Fortunately, there’s an extensive range of durable materials that can be used for worktops, and they come in a vast array of colours.
Laminate worktops are one of the most popular and affordable choices. They’re scratch-resistant, moisture-resistant, making them ideal for use around sinks, hobs and as food preparation areas.
Laminate worktops come in different colours and textures, including wood effect and many types of replica stone such as granite, slate, and marble. You also have the choice of high gloss or matt finishes.
Nobilia offers Worktop APN, 38 mm with N edge, where the laminate panel is coated all the way around both rounded front edges.
Worktop APD, 38 mm with décor edge have all 90° outer corners supplied in a square design. A rounded design is also available with an outer radius of 20 mm and inner corners with a radius of 30 mm.
Whereas standard worktops are 40 mm thick, Nobilia Slim Line panels are particularly sophisticated and just as sturdy with their thickness of only 16 mm.
A hardwearing alternative to laminate is a quartz worktop, which is resistant to scratches, stains and heat damage – it’s also virtually non-porous. It’s easy to keep clean and comes in a variety of colours, including whites and blacks through to browns and golds.
Granite is an extremely hard, luxury surface. It makes a stunning worktop that’s heat, stain and scratch-resistant.
Granite is often used on top of kitchen islands - its high gloss finish making an eye-catching feature. The island then becomes the focal point of the kitchen design.
As granite is a natural product, there are basic colour options.
Corian is made from a blend of acrylic resins, minerals and colouring. It forms a hard surface that can be shaped to any design or dimensions, even thermoformed into curves.
As a result of its flexibility, Corian can be moulded around sinks or used as a splashback. As it’s manmade, Corian comes in an extensive range of colour options and finishes. It’s one of the most flexible and practical work surfaces.
Timber contains natural anti-bacterial properties, making it an ideal surface for food preparation. It also has a high oil content, and because it’s water-resistant, it can be used around ovens and sinks.
Timber is perfect for informal or country-style kitchens. The grains and patterns of the wood bring character to the kitchen and a rustic cottage feel. It’s one of the most environmentally friendly choices for a worktop, when made from sustainable timber sources.
