What's trending in kitchens in 2021

High-gloss white cabinets reflect light to create a feeling of openness and space. You can use tall white cabinets to contrast with dark granite countertops, drawing the eye upwards to give the perception of height in smaller kitchens.

White walls will enhance the texture of wood-fronted cabinets, particularly bringing out the character and texture of dark timber.

White is also a good idea if you plan to move house at some stage as it’s neutral enough to appeal to plenty of buyers.

Downdraft extractors

Downdraft extractors have become increasingly popular this year as they’re the perfect combination of style and functionality.

A downdraft extractor can be integrated into the hob or below a kitchen worktop behind the hob. This way, the extractor removes odours, smoke and steam at the source, drawing vapours down before they can circulate around the kitchen.

A downdraft extractor is discreetly hidden when it’s not in use. They’re ideal for kitchen islands as they can sit flush with the worktop until they’re needed; then they rise up to extract air while you cook.

Sleek sinks

A simple sink can become a chic feature of a minimalist kitchen. A flush-mount sink blends in unobtrusively as it sits level with the worktop.

As well as looking stylish, flush-mount sinks make the worktop easy to wipe down as there’s no lip or rim for dirt to gather. It’s a low-maintenance and easy-to-clean sink for a busy kitchen.

Kitchen island sinks have also become increasingly popular, either as the main sink to save space on the worktop or as a second sink. As a second sink, it can be used for food preparation rather than for washing up.

Handleless cabinets

The free-flowing lines of handleless cabinets are ideally suited to the current trend for uncluttered kitchens. The clever design of push-open and close doors makes them perfect for multi-tasking because you can open the door from the top or side.

Sleek lines are maintained as nothing is sticking out from the doors and the lack of knobs and handles makes cabinets easy to wipe down.

Handleless kitchens give the impression of clean, uncluttered surfaces and ergonomic flow. And because there are no handles to date the design, a handleless kitchen always looks on-trend.

Old-fashioned pantries and larders

The traditional pantry cupboard is making a comeback. Instead of keeping food in different cabinets around the kitchen, the pantry cupboard or larder stores it all in one place.

A significant benefit of a pantry cupboard is that it helps you to stay organised. You can arrange all your foodstuff in order and easily see when you’re running low on something. It also leaves your kitchen cabinets free to house glasses, crockery and cook wear.
