Fun Festive Kitchen Ideas for Christmas

Bring some festive sparkle to your kitchen this year.

With so much going on in the kitchen at Christmas time, you’ll want to make sure the room is as full of fun as the rest of the house.

Here are some tips to bring festive sparkle, scents and Santa to your kitchen this Christmas.

Fragrant festive treats

Mulled wine not only tastes great, it smells wonderful too! There are hundreds of different recipes online, and you can create your own alcoholic or non-alcoholic brew. Traditionally, spices and fruit are added to the warm drink, and when you heat these, the aroma will spread through the kitchen.

Dried spices and fruits in a festive pot pourri are ideal for decorating the table and conjuring up that familiar Christmas scent. You can easily make your own with cinnamon sticks, pinecones, star anise and slices of dried orange.

Bring out the festive kitchenware

A simple way to bring festive cheer to the kitchen without putting up decorations is to make sure your Christmassy storage tins and mugs are on display.

Decorated cake tins and sweetie jars will bring colour to shelves and worktops. Put those fun pots and serving dishes on show – and bring out the Christmas cups and plates.

There’s nothing like hot chocolate and marshmallows served in a bright Santa mug. Or a three-tier cake stand covered with sweets, treats and mini Xmas crackers.

Make edible decorations

If you have young children, this is a fun way of keeping them entertained.

A gingerbread house is a Christmas tradition that originated in Germany but has become popular all over the world. If you don’t want to make one from scratch, you can buy an undecorated house and then go to town with icing and edible decorations.

Mint creams are simple to make, and you can roll out the mixture and cut into snowmen and Christmas trees – and mess around with food die to colour them. You can fill wafer ice cream cones with jellies or marshmallows. And shop-bought or homemade meringues can be decorated or threaded into garlands.

Decorate your Christmas table

When the table is not in use, a simple poinsettia will bring a splash of red to brighten it up or add a miniature Christmas tree as a centrepiece.

Once the table is covered in dishes, you won’t want too much clutter. A central scented candle decoration will bring light and fragrance, and a few sprigs of greenery such as pine and holly adds a simple but effective touch.

Bring extra sparkle with strings of lights

You’ll want to avoid any flammable decorations in a kitchen, and you won’t want anything that gets in the way when you’re cooking.

Strings of twinkling fairy lights can bring light and cheer without taking up valuable space. They can be draped over the fridge, along an open shelf or over cupboards and cabinets.

You can place a line of hanging stars across a bare wall or in front of a window. Or a string of traditional coloured lights could be tacked around the door frame.
