Make your kitchen a sociable space this Christmas

Bring your kitchen to life this Christmas.

Everyone gravitates towards the kitchen at Christmas time – because that’s where the food is!

So why not make your kitchen a more welcoming place for family and friends to socialise? A few adjustments to your layout, and you can create a fun place for festive gatherings.

Bring harmony to your kitchen

If your kitchen is cluttered, why not have a clear out? You can create a workspace that allows different people to do different activities at the same time.

For example, how often does someone want to make coffee while someone else is trying to get to the toaster? By setting aside enough room for multiple tasks to take place, peace will reign this Christmas - in the kitchen at least.

Make it a comfortable room

Do you make full use of your kitchen table or island? They can be so much more than just a worksurface. A simple rearrangement could allow for all kinds of activities, including serving snacks and playing board games.

See how many stools or chairs you can comfortably get in your kitchen. And if you have enough space, can you make a relaxing area with a small sofa?

Soft furnishings can help the kitchen to feel more homely. Non-slip rugs will give comfort underfoot if you have cold floors. Cushions will make seats softer and can be used to add a splash of colour.

Provide plenty of entertainment

Kitchens are now becoming entertainment spaces, where we read, watch tv, play games and listen to music. A few simple adjustments, and you can transform your kitchen into a fun place to be.

Is there a wall where you can attach a large screen? This can be used to watch films and TV or play computer games.

Everyone loves a kitchen gadget, and these can provide entertainment if you involve your guests in food and drink preparations. From sandwich toasters to waffle makers, producing delicious snacks offers hours of fun.

Preparing drinks can be equally entertaining if you have the latest high-tech coffee maker with all the trendy coffees. However, you don’t need to splash out to have fun. A simple cocktail shaker and cocktail glasses are enough to transform your kitchen into a lively bar.

Adjust your lighting

Sometimes kitchens can be overly bright because you need to be able to see the food you’re preparing and cooking.

However, when you’re socialising, a softer illumination is more relaxing. A dimmer switch is the ideal solution as it allows you to adjust the lighting according to mood.

A central pendant light is perfect as you can switch off all the spotlights and under cabinet lighting and turn the dimmer to an appropriate setting.

Bring life to the walls

If the walls of your kitchen are bare, why not brighten them up with a few paintings or prints? That way, the room feels more hospitable and not just a practical workspace.

Photographs are another great way to bring personality to a kitchen and make it more homely. When you have guests, photos can break the ice and become a talking point.
