Good lighting is one of the best ways to enhance your home.
Light and bright is high on the wishlist of most potential buyers when viewing properties.
Clever lighting can transform even the darkest of rooms. And when it comes to kitchens, there are plenty of ways you can bring light to every corner.
If you’re considering changing the layout of your kitchen, it’s worth seeing if you can make windows or doors bigger. If this isn’t feasible, you may find that even changing your glazing units will make a difference.
The latest double-glazing has minimal framework, so you get less frame and more glass. Another idea is to swap a solid door for a glass door or one with an inset window.
Another tip is to avoid limiting the amount of light coming into your kitchen. Instead of heavy window dressings, simple vertical or horizontal blinds are often the best option as you can adjust them to control how much light enters the room.
The most common type of task lighting is under-cabinet LED strips. These ensure your worktops are sufficiently illuminated when you’re chopping, cutting, and handling hot food.
LED strips are popular as they fit neatly under cabinets and offer bright, unbroken light across the working area, giving you clear visibility. LED spotlights can also be useful to highlight sinks and hobs if your cooker hood doesn’t have a built-in light.
Ceiling-mounted lights, flush-fitted with directional spots, can direct beams over specific areas such as the sink or worktop. These can be used in combination or instead of under-cabinet lighting.
Individual spotlights can be mounted into ceilings or walls and angled to focus on your food preparation zones. Or you can fit multiple spotlights along a central track. Each spotlight should focus on a different area, and they’re easily re-directed if you change the layout of your kitchen.
A simple overhead pendant light combined with a dimmer switch will offer strong illumination over a table or kitchen island when you’re working, or softer light for intimate meals.
Versatile pendant lights on retractable cords can be pulled low over the table or kitchen island to create intimacy. Or set high when not in use to give more horizontal space.
An extra-large pendant light with a steel frame will make a big style statement and give the impression of an urban professional kitchen.
Uplighters look great in kitchens with high ceilings. They can be positioned on top of kitchen cabinets to produce a mood-enhancing glow.
They can also be placed at the foot of floor-based cabinets and inside glass-fronted cabinets. The unseen source of light brings ambience and atmosphere to the kitchen.
In smaller kitchens, hidden uplights will reduce the need for larger overhead lights.
Another way to use lighting to bring atmosphere and character to a kitchen is to add lights to a display cabinet.
By lighting a glass-fronted cabinet, you’re highlighting your favourite items. These could be glasswear, trendy cookware or an ornamental display.
You can place a few small dot lights inside a cabinet to backlight an item. Or position the lights a few inches from the front of the cabinet to shine inwards.
