Choose the right flooring for your kitchen

What to consider when choosing kitchen flooring.

Space, style, maintenance, and other flooring benefits should be considered when choosing the right flooring for your kitchen.

From luxury vinyl flooring and linoleum to real wood and stone tiles, we take a look at what will work best in your kitchen.

What size is your kitchen?

In a smaller kitchen, you want to create the illusion of more space. If you’re planning on tiles, large sizes often work better than smaller tiles. This is because multiple grout joints can detract from the tile itself and make the room feel enclosed. You can use a matching grout colour that blends in and isn’t as noticeable or try using larger tiles to give a more spacious look.

The colour of your flooring will also make a difference to your perception of space. In larger kitchens, you have the scope to be more dramatic. But in a compact kitchen, you want a lighter shade to enhance natural light rather than a darker shade that will absorb it.

Should you contrast or coordinate colours?

If you want to harmonise your flooring with your cabinets, opt for the same finish. So choose either matt or gloss for both and opt for matching colours.

Grey matt concrete cabinets will blend with matt concrete flooring. Or a high gloss floor surface will complement gloss-fronted cabinets.

Alternatively, you can choose different finishes and colours to create a stylish contrast. A bright white gloss floor can create a stunning contrast with matt black or dark red cabinet fronts.

How much maintenance is required?

The kitchen is usually the busiest and hardest-working room in the house, which means the floor surface has to be durable.

When looking at flooring choices, consider how much maintenance you have time for. If you have a busy lifestyle, you’ll want an easy-to-clean surface that will require nothing more than a sweep and an occasional clean with a mop.

Luxury vinyl tiles are scratch and stain-resistant and easy to keep clean. They’re also warm and comfortable underfoot. Laminate and linoleum are other low-maintenance options.

Natural stone with a textured surface is very forgiving. Scuffs and marks won’t show up, and it has a naturally aged look that’s timeless.

Real wood flooring will require higher levels of maintenance. In a humid environment, where temperatures vary, wood can be prone to warping. Ideally, the timber should be treated every few years to seal it against moisture.

Interested in sustainable flooring options?

Cork is one of the most sustainable flooring surfaces. It’s 100% natural and renewable as it comes from the bark of a cork oak tree that can be stripped every ten years without harming the tree. It’s highly resilient and can cope with heavy footfall.

Cork is soft underfoot and provides thermal and acoustic insulation. It can be vacuumed and mopped clean and occasionally recoated when it shows signs of wear and tear.

If you’re planning to have a real wood floor, look for wood that’s been derived from sustainable sources. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is the best-known accredited sustainability certification scheme. It ensures the sustainability of the source forests and that environmentally responsible practices are followed during manufacture and distribution.
