Choosing the perfect seating in your kitchen.
The simplest way to make your kitchen a relaxing place to socialise is to add seating!
From formal dining chairs to breakfast bar stools, you can make the most of your kitchen with these seating ideas. We offer inspiration on how to create an intimate seating space for two or a large family seating area.
A dining table and chairs may sound traditional, but with so much choice in kitchen furniture, you can give it a contemporary twist.
For a start, you don’t have to have matching chairs. You can either have all mismatched chairs (a current trend) or choose two alternating designs.
Chairs are a great way to accessorise a kitchen. A traditional central table can be combined with rustic chairs or with modern painted chairs. The dining chairs can become part of your design, and you can paint or upholster them to fit in with your colour scheme.
Kitchen islands are popular because they’re so versatile. They can be used for food preparation, working or dining.
Kitchen island seating can be just as versatile. Long islands with an overhang can be broken up with occasional seating spaces, or you can choose to surround your islands with chairs or stools. Tall barstools enable your guests to be involved with you while you potter in the kitchen.
The critical factor with any kitchen island seating is to ensure that the space you allow for the seating is proportionate to your kitchen island. Don’t choose chairs with arms that jut out, as you’ll find yourself constantly banging into them.
The most flexible option is to choose a kitchen island with indented space beneath so that stools and chairs can be tucked under when not in use.
You can define a seating area even in a small, compact kitchen. In fact, just by placing a couple of stools next to a worktop, you create a seating space.
Planning is key to creating a relaxing seating area. If you just want to enjoy a hot drink while sitting down, you can place a couple of stools close to the kettle. However, if you want to get away from the bustle of the kitchen, try to create a quiet space where you can take your drinks or food to enjoy in a more peaceful corner of the room.
If you’re happy being in the centre of the action, a breakfast bar is great as it will also give you extra workspace when preparing food. Even in a small kitchen, a breakfast bar can be added to the end of a run of units. An alternative is to create an overhang on the worksurface to form an area where a stool can be placed, and you can sit with your knees comfortably underneath.
If you have more space to play with, a U-shaped breakfast bar will accommodate the whole family. These are popular as they offer plenty of informal seating space – you can perch on chairs or stools whenever you want and tuck them away when they’re not needed.
