Create a modern-day pantry in your kitchen

The pantry is making a comeback!

Its rise in popularity is no doubt due to the practical help it offers in the kitchen.

What is a pantry?

It’s believed the word pantry comes from the French word for bread, as that was what it was initially used to store. It was a cool, dark place to house perishable foods.

Over the years, it has been adapted as a storage place for all sorts of foodstuffs, mainly non-perishables. Designed solely to store food products, it gives you the perfect location to bring together your tins, jars, cans and packets. It’s known as the cook’s favourite cupboard as they can see at a glance what they have in stock.

A pantry could be a cupboard or room off the kitchen or integrated into the kitchen design as a built-in or freestanding unit. Ideally, it has sections of shelving that can be used to organise food products into different groups.

Types of pantries

As well as being extremely practical, a walk-in pantry makes a style statement. You can swing open the door to reveal wall-to-wall shelves filled with dry foods. If it’s large enough, you can also use it to house pots and pans as well as your tinned and packet foods and non-perishables.

A built-in pantry is more common and fits into most kitchens. It can look just like your other cabinets, or you can choose a feature such as bi-fold doors to make it stand out. This type of pantry is extremely useful for storing general tinned and packet foodstuffs.

A pull-out pantry is usually tall and narrow, and, as the name suggests, it can be pulled out to reveal organised shelving. This is perfect for storing smaller non-perishables and jars of herbs and spices.

The benefits of a pantry

The organisation it offers is a significant benefit to having a pantry. As the old saying goes, ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’.

Rather than storing food products randomly in different cupboards, a pantry enables you to organise your food items. When you’re preparing meals, it’s handy to be able to reach for foods in the same place instead of hunting around the kitchen for each ingredient. It allows for quick and easy access whenever you need something while cooking.

With a pantry, your go-to foods are always on hand, and you can organise products so you can quickly see when you’re running low on an item. A pantry is also great for hiding away goods – keeping your worktops clear of tins and jars.

Nobilia’s innovative pantry

The 2023 Nobilia grid system represents design-oriented kitchen design and customised storage space planning. The highly practical CARGO pantry unit provides plenty of space for your food supplies.

You can integrate your pantry into your kitchen design to ensure it’s in a place that works for you. And when it’s not in use, you simply close the doors and no one knows that it’s there.

It’s a great way to stay organised, reduce clutter and make use of space.
