Choose the right worktop for your kitchen

Worktops need to be tough to withstand being used for a range of kitchen tasks on a daily basis.

However, as well as being practical, they also need to be stylish and pleasing to the eye.

With such an extensive range of colours and textures available, it can be difficult to choose the right worktop for your kitchen, so let’s take a look at some of the most popular options.

Quartz worktops

Engineered quartz is fabricated from natural quartz with added glass or metallic flecks to create an attractive worktop surface. It’s made of 90-94% round quartz and 6-10% resins and pigments, which are combined to form durable and nonporous slabs.

Quartz worktops are tough, resistant to scratches, stains, heat damage and impact and are virtually non-porous. They make an ideal kitchen surface as you can keep them clean simply by wiping with a soft, damp cloth and a mild detergent.

You have a wide variety of colour options to choose from varying from whites and blacks to browns and golds.

Granite worktops

Granite is the hardest natural product on earth after diamond, sapphire and ruby. It’s a luxury material that’s used in classic kitchen designs and looks stunning as a work surface in any area of the kitchen including around the sink or hob.

A granite island worktop makes an eye-catching feature and can become the centrepiece of your kitchen with its high gloss finish, which it never loses. Because granite is heat, stain and scratch resistant, it’s as practical as it is attractive.

However, as it’s a natural product, you won’t have a huge range of colour options; therefore, it’s best to plan your kitchen around the slab you’ve chosen.

Corian worktops

Corian is made from a blend of acrylic resins, minerals and colourings to create stone-hard surfaces that can be shaped to any design or dimension. The material can be thermoformed into curves to form seamless one-piece moulded sinks and splashbacks or islands.

There is an extensive range of colour options and finishes available, making Corian a highly desirable and practical work surface.

Laminate worktops

Laminate worktops are a popular and cost-effective kitchen surface solution. They’re made by fusing multiple layers of impregnated paper under high-pressure temperature, bonded to a substrate. As a result, they’re resistant to impact, scratching and moisture making them ideal for general use such as food preparation areas, sink runs and around hobs and cookers.

Offering easy maintenance, laminate worktops come in a vast range of colours and textures, often made to replicate other surfaces including granite, slate and wood. Versatile and durable, laminate worktops are an affordable and practical choice for any kitchen.

Solid Timber worktops

A wood worktop brings warmth and character to a kitchen to create a natural ambience. Available in a variety of grains, patterns and tones, they’re an eco-friendly option.

Solid Timber worktops are very hygienic as they contain natural anti-bacterial properties, making them perfect for food preparation and dining areas, plus they have a high oil content and are water resistant so can be used around sinks.

As Solid Timber is so striking, it’s often used to create standalone islands or breakfast bars.
