Modern colours & sleek lines will add a dash of urban style to your kitchen.
You may also want to consider perception. Many urban kitchens use tricks to make them appear larger as city space is at a premium. Here we take a look at different ways you can bring urban flair into your home.
A simple black and white design or a monochromatic scheme in shades of grey look fantastic in an urban kitchen setting, offering a clean and contemporary appearance.
Walls painted in base grey offset with cabinets in a softer dove grey creates a calm, classic feel. Alternatively, a grey background with burnished black or polished metallic surfaces gives a darker, more dramatic design.
Brown and copper tones have also become increasingly popular, providing a neutral base to build on. Copper accents can be complemented with sparkling worksurfaces and gloss brown cabinets and drawers.
As well as the colours you choose, the materials you include in your kitchen will also make an urban statement. For example, quartz, Corian and granite surfaces are all stylish and hardwearing.
Quartz worktops are durable and resistant to stains, scratches, and heat damage. They’re ideal for a busy person as you can keep them clean simply by wiping them over with a cloth. Corian worksurfaces are highly versatile as they’re made from a blend of acrylic resins, minerals and colourings. This creates a stone-hard surface that can be shaped to any design or dimension, so it can be made to fit the space you have available.
A granite island will make a striking central feature as granite has a high gloss finish, which it never loses. Plus, it’s highly practical as it’s heat, stain and scratch resistant.
The layout of your urban kitchen should be sharp and focussed with concealed storage areas and hidden appliances. A flush mounted stove with a control panel that sits below the kitchen countertop will give a clean, uncluttered feel to your workspace.
A standout item such as an island or a long worksurface with a high gloss top can become an eye-catching focal point. But this individual feature shouldn’t overwhelm the overall design. Instead, complement it with contrasting cabinets and stylish countertop appliances.
Urban kitchens are usually eat-in kitchens, and you can replace the formality of a dining table with an island or a bar with stools or armless chairs. This option not only provides a more relaxed environment, it also takes up less room.
Space can sometimes be tight in an urban kitchen, but mirrored splashbacks can give you the illusion of more room and light.
Cabinets can be stacked vertically to give you extra storage in the space you have. And under the counter appliances work well if you don’t have an area to put a tall fridge or freezer.
Pull out cabinet drawers are perfect for hiding away pots and pans that could otherwise clutter up work surfaces. Or you could opt for built-in shelving and turn your array of pans into a display piece.
