Bring your personality into your kitchen design

Stamp your individuality on your kitchen design.

There are many ways to do this, from accessorising with unique handles on kitchen cabinets to mix and matching with tiles and splashbacks.

Here are some of the most popular ways to show your personality in your kitchen design.

Introduce colour to floors and walls

Don’t think your kitchen needs to be neutral or monochrome. Colours will bring life and energy to your kitchen design. And it’s not just walls that can be used to introduce patterns or colours.

Floor tiles in a favourite shade or design will bring character to the room. However, if you have opted for a strong statement with your flooring, you should aim to keep the walls fairly neutral.

Coloured tiles or mirrored splashbacks will offer personality and warmth. But the same rule applies, when it comes to overdoing it. If you have incorporated colourful tiles and splashbacks, try to keep your worktops and cabinets reasonably simple.

Don’t attempt to cram too many colours in as it can become overwhelming to look at.

Illuminate with striking kitchen lighting

An easy way to brighten up your kitchen is to change the lighting. Floor lights, under-cabinet lights and spotlights can bring new dimensions into your kitchen.

The beauty of having a range of lights is that you can adjust according to the time of day and mood. You don’t want your kitchen to be glaringly bright while you’re enjoying a relaxing meal. On the other hand, you need sufficient illumination when you’re preparing food and cooking.

While it’s necessary to have overhead lighting, you can add wall lights and low pendants to provide atmosphere in the evenings.

Choose a standout feature

A standout feature is a great way to introduce personality into your kitchen.

For example, a family-sized dining table can be the centrepiece. To highlight that it’s the focal point, you can illuminate it with a low-hung pendant light and decorate with elaborate table dressings.

A kitchen island is another popular statement feature. With a high gloss top, it can become an integral and stylish cornerstone of your kitchen design. It’s also highly practical, giving you additional space for dining and food preparation.

A kitchen island can also act as a divider between the cooking section of your kitchen and the dining area. And it can become a breakfast bar with chairs or stools placed on just one side.

You may not think of a sink as a standout item, but it can be. A stunning marble standalone sink makes an eye-catching feature. Or a state-of-the-art cooking range could be your kitchen highpoint.

What most reflects your personality?

It could be colour and energy. Or a stylish statement. What you choose to distinguish your kitchen will depend on your personality.

If socialising is important to you, then focus on the dining element. However, if food is your passion, then concentrate on how you like to cook. Your kitchen should work for your personality and lifestyle, and its design should reflect who you are.
