Time for a Kitchen Makeover?

Posted in Blog
20 May 2020

Stay productive during lockdown!

Having to spend so much time at home during lockdown has resulted in many people, understandably, finding new ways to keep busy, both mentally and physically.

Perhaps you have exhausted your to-do list having tackled the smaller jobs around the home over the last few weeks? If so, and you are now wondering what else you can do to keep busy in coming weeks, then a longer project, such as a kitchen make-over, will be a productive use of your time and will help to ease the boredom.

As restrictions are eased, tradespeople will be allowed to work in your home as long as they abide by social distancing laws, so even if fitting the kitchen yourself is too big a challenge, you can be spending time on planning your dream kitchen whilst you have time to do so.

Set Your Objectives

A starting point for all project planning is setting objectives. What is most important to you?

  • Do you want to increase storage capacity?
  • Do you want more worktop space?
  • Do you want to create a more social space where friends and family can gather?
  • Do you need your workspace to be more efficient than the current layout?
  • Are you happy with the existing layout, and are just looking to give it a face-lift?

Work out your top priorities, measure up and sketch a plan layout that you feel will achieve your objectives. At K Interiors, we offer a free kitchen design consultation, so we can help you to decide on the best configuration to suit your needs. Just give us a call or book online!

Once you have decided on a kitchen layout that is going to be efficient and comfortable, it’s time to get creative in choosing your kitchen style and colour scheme.

On-Trend Stone and Two-Tone

There are two strong trends for 2020 – the concrete look and the two-tone look.

Concrete-Look Kitchens

Concrete ties in well with the trend for industrial styling in the kitchen and is set to be the finish of choice in 2020. You may think that concrete would produce a cold feel, but in reality, its elegance brings warmth and character. Concrete and grey cabinets, worktops, tiles, splashbacks and walls all bring an industrial but appealing vibe to kitchens of all sizes. Read more about concrete kitchens in our recent blog Amazingly Cool Concrete-Look Kitchens.

Two-Tone Kitchens

The trend is moving away from ‘blended’ kitchen colour schemes to combining two colours throughout kitchen cabinetry. The two-tone contrasting finish is becoming a desirable and interesting aesthetic that can change the whole feel of the room. It is best to choose a dark colour for the units and contrast it with a brighter shade elsewhere to add depth and character to space.

Decorative Worktops

Strongly veined patterning to create a marble-effect is a popular worktop choice in 2020. Quartz and ceramic worktops offer a cost-effective and low-hassle alternative to real marble and create a luxurious aesthetic which is truly eye-catching.

Statement Floors & Taps

The key to creating a statement floor is to keep everything around it plain and simple. Go for a strong patterned style floor, and choose a contrasting solid colour for the units. Keep the worktops plain and light in colour so your floor remains the focal point.

Adding statement taps is another way to bring the wow factor into your kitchen. Statement taps are very on-trend this year. Look at industrial styles, brass for example, which is more warming and an ideal shade for enhancing on-trend blue and green cabinetry. Taps with attractive and unusual features can really transform a kitchen. Consider adding similar features for cupboard and draw grips for consistency.

Creating a Social Space

We spend a lot of time in our kitchens. We don’t just prepare and cook food, we use the kitchen as a social area to connect with friends and family. If one of your objectives is to create more social space in your kitchen, then you will need to consider adding seating and opening up the space as much as possible. You could consider integrated seating, such as breakfast nooks, or window bay seating. Breakfast bar extensions are popular in smaller kitchens, or a multi-functional kitchen island unit makes a stunning feature that will provide an all-in-one workstation for food prep, cooking, socialising and working.
