Find out more about choosing an accent colour
There are many considerations when planning a new kitchen, and choosing the colour scheme is probably the one we deliberate over the most.
A colour scheme is not only defined by the colours you choose for your walls, floors and cabinets, the colour you choose for your kitchen gadgets, plant pots and accessories can make or break the cohesion of a kitchen.
Even if you think you know the colours you prefer, there are an infinite number of shades, tones and hues to choose from, making it even harder to decide.
If you dare to be colourful, you can really make an impact by using an accent colour. A great accent colour will bring depth and personality to a kitchen. You can use it on the walls, backsplash, cabinets, edging, shelving or simply in the décor you accent the space with.
An accent colour is often bold or vivid and should be used sparingly, to emphasise, contrast or create rhythm. More toned down colours such as neutrals or darker shades can also be used depending on the surroundings.
Red works really well as an accent colour, and is a popular choice, perhaps because the colour red is said to stimulate the appetite! Red is a colour of power. It makes a strong statement, particularly when contrasting with black and grey tones.
Yellow is a colour you may not have considered, but look at how it brightens this kitchen! Yellow is a cheerful colour and depicts an air of freshness, happiness and positivity. If you are going to combine your kitchen with a workspace, then yellow is certainly a colour to consider as it represents mind and intellect and apparently stimulates our mental faculties!
Green is considered the colour of freshness which is why many food, supermarket and health food brands have green logos. There are many great shades to choose from. Below we use on-trend lime green as an accent colour.
