Make your kitchen design personal

Analyse the flow of your home & make it personal.

If you want to make your kitchen design personal, think about your living space and lifestyle before you consider cabinets and worktops.

By analysing the flow of your home into the kitchen and the aspect of the room itself, you can make more informed choices over the types of cabinets and worktops that will work best for you.

Plan the layout of your kitchen

Does your kitchen lead off from another room or a hallway? Does it overlook your garden? By taking these factors into consideration during your planning, you can make your kitchen design personal.

For instance, if the kitchen is attached to a family room, you may want to situate the oven away from the main access route into the kitchen. You don’t want children constantly passing you when you’re cooking.

You will also want to decide on the most practical route to the fridge. Do you want it to be easily accessible, or are you trying to avoid snacking?

If the kitchen overlooks a garden, you’ll want to be able to enjoy the view. That could mean positioning a worktop and sink under the window. Or giving the dining table pride of place, so the garden is in view while eating.

Choose your kitchen cabinets

If your dining area is in the section of the room that enjoys the most natural light, your kitchen cabinets will be at the darker end of the kitchen. If this is the case, choose light coloured cabinets to reflect light back into the room. This will create a more spacious feel and make the room appear larger.

High gloss cabinet fronts will also reflect light. These can be in bold colours or sleek white. Whether you opt for matt or gloss is largely down to the atmosphere you want to create. If you’re looking for an ultra-modern look, then a gloss finish makes a statement. However, you may prefer the more relaxed, laid-back feel of a matt finish.

It’s easy to personalise your kitchen with coloured cabinets as there’s such a wide variety of shades and finishes now available. Classic wood works well in country-style kitchens, while bold, darker colours define contemporary chic.

You could opt for cabinets in a neutral base tone of white, cream, grey, pale green or blue, or beige, and then accessorise with handles, worktops and splashbacks.

Find worktops that harmonise

Once you’ve decided on your kitchen cabinets, you’ll need to find a worksurface that blends or compliments the units.

If you’ve gone for dark cabinets, then a worktop in a lighter shade like a pale wood or granite will offer contrast and balance. Or combine cabinets in softer shades with dark granite or Corian.

For a softer feel throughout the whole kitchen, you can blend pale cabinets with light, neutral worktops. This will give the impression of a more spacious room.

Look at different worktop materials

Engineered quartz is fabricated from natural quartz with added glass or metallic flecks. It’s made of 90 to 94% round quartz and 6 to 10% resins and pigments that are combined into durable and nonporous slabs. The result is a stunning range of colour options, including whites, golds as well as browns and black.

Corian is a unique blend of minerals and acrylic that creates a stone-hard surface, which can be shaped to meet any design or dimension. It also comes in an extensive range of colours and finishes making it an ideal choice if you have a particular colour scheme in mind.

Polished, natural granite maintains its high gloss almost forever and is heat, stain and scratch-resistant. As a natural product, it harmonises well with timber cabinets.

Wooden worktops are perfect for natural designs such as cottage and country style kitchens. The wood brings its own character with unique grains, patterns and tones.
