What to Look for in A Quality Kitchen

Your kitchen is at the core of your home. It’s where you cook, eat, clean up, chat, entertain – there’s always something going on in the kitchen.

And whether you have a large or small space, you can design your kitchen to suit you and your family’s lifestyle. Here are a few tips on what to look for in a quality kitchen.

Match your kitchen to your needs

At one time, the tendency was to try and match your kitchen to the style of your home. Cottage style for rustic, rural properties and sleek modern designs for new builds and apartments.

But nowadays you can have the best of both with a mix of modern and traditional to suit your home life. The trick is to choose timeless features that won’t date.

For example, opt for cabinets and drawers without handles. Rather than having knobs and handles that detract from the look of the cupboards or drawers, hidden grooves are incorporated into the doors to make them easy to open. A cottage style kitchen in a modern, fast-moving environment may seem like a contradiction. But by customising the features of your kitchen, you can make it work for your lifestyle.

Choose quality materials

Quality kitchens are defined by their detail, craftsmanship and materials.

Look for tough and durable materials such as quartz, granite or laminate worktops. You can read more on this in Choose the right worktop for your kitchen.

In-frame kitchens are another option that will provide you with a long-lasting build that’s able to withstand the pressures of modern living. Our In-frame kitchens are installed using butt hinges fixed to the frame and door to provide a strong structure. The doors won’t weaken or drop over time as the frame holds them firmly in place. This also applies to drawers as the framework helps prevent wear and tear. Discover more about Creating a beautiful In-Frame kitchen.

Another key to a quality kitchen is to have functional interior fittings. These can be customised to suit your height. The aim is to ensure your workspace is practical and efficient and geared to the way you move around your kitchen.

Plan your kitchen layout

The space you have available to you will often dictate the layout of your kitchen.

For smaller kitchens, cabinets with glass fronts and acrylic shelves will look smaller on the wall than a cupboard with a solid door. Also, avoid islands in small spaces as you’re better off going for a more streamlined layout. However, islands are perfect if you have a large central area.

In a small galley kitchen, pale colours and reflective surfaces will help bring light to the room. But if you already have a bright, sunny kitchen, you may want to avoid shiny surfaces as you’ll be overwhelmed by the glare of reflections. Instead, you should choose matt finishes.

Essentially, use mirrored glass type surfaces on shelves and splashbacks if you want to give the illusion of more space. Plus, laminate or stone surfaces in pale and sparkly colours can make rooms seem bigger.
